New! Rear seat airbags from Toyota

The news is out that Toyota is experimenting with the concept of rear seat airbags in a few of its models, most probably the Crown Majesta luxury sedan. The car company whose innovative ideas are one of the reasons that factor into it being one of the most bankable car companies in the world, even in these days of recession. Customers are still queuing up to apply for car loans hoping that the fresh car finance schemes floated by numerous vehicle finance companies will see them through to owning their own Toyota. MiND ($699.99) stands for Mobile Internet Navigation Device, but these sleek pieces of tech does much more than just provide directions and find Points of Interest (POI). Because it can connect to the Internet via either a WiFi connection or using a Bluetooth Dial-Up Network (DUN), MiND provides powerful and convenient Google mapping capabilities and can receive POI information wirelessly from a PC. Plus, it can download video content from YouTube and access MySpace through dedicated widgets on its 4.8-inch WVGA LCD touchscreen. While aftermarket manufacturers dominated CES for years, automakers and their suppliers have begun using CES as a high-profile setting to introduce key new technologies. Two years ago Ford chose the occasion to launch its Microsoft-powered Sync system, with Bill Gates making it part of his CES keynote address. Last year, GM Chairman Rick Wagoner became the first auto-industry exec to deliver a keynote, while this year Ford CEO Alan Mulally used the occasion to highlight the new features of Sync 2.0. Come on now, we’re not being mean to the fine, upstanding individuals that think up concepts for accessories that help us out or make life just that little bit more entertaining or zany but this is just to put a question mark to all those crazy inventions that keep emerging from the toy stores of major automakers. We love ideas that turn into practical solutions like self-warming seats and high-end multimedia systems built into the car, but what about accessories that have the potential to turn your car into a four-wheeled tech disaster?

Look no further than the new General Motors left hand steering stalk that until the very recent past, had the cruise controls, in a tiny three-switch button affair that also houses the high-beam headlights, windshield wipers and the turning signals.
